Sahara Bank was established in 1964 and it was designed by Italian Vincenzo Maria Moric. On December 22, 1970, Libya passed a law requiring all foreign bank shares to be nationalized and fully owned by Libya.
The Central Bank of Libya owns 82% of the Sahara Bank. BNP Paribas acquired the bank in July 2007 and began to manage its business. BNP Paribas withdrew from the bank’s business in 2011. Sahara Bank provides retail and corporate banking services and is headquartered in Tripoli.
As of 1991, the main shareholder of Sahara Bank was the Central Bank of Libya, with an interest rate of 82%. It is one of the top ten banks controlled by the Central Bank of Libya.
Sahara Bank provides retail and commercial banking services, as well as international trade center services. It also provides large-scale payments, POS payments, financial services, car rentals, Islamic banks and Italian service desks.
