Royal Hobart Hospital

Royal Hobart Hospital is a public hospital in the Central Business District of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It cooperates with the University of Tasmania as a teaching hospital. The hospital’s research facility is called the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation. The Menzies Institute is also close to the hospital.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is managed by the Tasmanian Government and is an agency of the Ministry of Health and Human Services. It is the largest hospital and largest employer in Tasmania. The hospital serves all areas in southern Tasmania and can accommodate 400 patients. Services include: cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, major trauma, high-risk obstetrics, hypertension medicine and neonatal intensive care.

Recently, the Royal Hobart Hospital launched a $565 million redevelopment project, which includes a new women’s and children’s area, cancer services, intensive care unit and day surgery facilities.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the second oldest hospital in Australia (after Sydney Hospital) and first started serving the community in 1804. It moved to its current location on Liverpool Street in 1820.

On July 1, 1992, Hobart Repatriation General Hospital was transferred to the Tasmanian public hospital system and contacted the hospital through the emergency care plan after the establishment of the new institution. It is a community rehabilitation place and provides professional health and hospitalized elderly services.
