Electricite du Laos (EDL) is a Lao state-owned enterprise that owns and operates power generation, transmission and distribution throughout Laos. The company also manages the electricity import and export of the Lao National Grid. The Lao Electric Power Company was founded in 1959 and is headquartered in Vientiane.
In July 2010, the International Finance Corporation lent US$15 million to the Lao Electric Power Company to expand the power network and substations in rural Laos. The company also obtained debt financing from the Asian Development Bank. By 2020, the Lao government expects to provide electricity to 90% of Lao households.
EDL-Generation Co., Ltd. was established in 2010 as a subsidiary of Lao Electric Power Company. The company is the only net exporter in the Mekong region and is nicknamed ‘Asian Battery’. The company sells electricity to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and China.
