name: National Geographic Institute of Guatemala
The National Geographic Institute of Guatemala (IGN) is a Guatemalan government scientific institution established on December 29, 1964.
In the 1930s, the Guatemala cartographic project was carried out by a special cartographic committee, mainly responsible for border investigations. The Department of Maps and Cartography in Guatemala was established in 1945, followed by the establishment of the Guatemala National School of Civil Engineering in 1964. In 1982, the National Academy of Civil Engineering of Guatemala merged with the Department of Military Cartography of Guatemala to become the Academy of Geography and Armaments of Guatemala.
In January 1998, with the demilitarization of national institutions under the ‘Peace Agreement’, the National Geographic Institute of Guatemala played an important role in the development of Guatemala’s Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Agriculture.
