The Guatemala National Council of Protected Areas (Consejo Nacional de Areas Protegidas, CONAP) is a government agency that protects and sustainably use Guatemala’s biodiversity and protected areas. The Guatemala National Council of Protected Areas was created in accordance with Guatemala Decree No. 4-89 or Protected Areas Act, and has jurisdiction over the Guatemala Protected Area System.
The main functions of the Guatemala National Committee on Protected Areas:
Promote, protect and improve Guatemala’s natural heritage,
organize, guide and develop Guatemala’s protected area system
planning, and implement Guatemala’s national biodiversity and renewable natural resources protection strategy
. Coordinate the national flora and fauna through their respective executive agencies. Management of resources and biological diversity
Planning and coordination of applicable regulations on the protection of biological diversity in international agreements ratified by Guatemala
Establishing a national natural conservation fund
