The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) is an independent administrative institution in Japan and one of the largest scientific research centers in Japan.

Historical development of the National Institute of Materials Science of Japan:

In 1956, the National Institute of Metal Research of Japan was established in Meguro District, Tokyo, Japan.

In 1979, the National Institute of Metal Research of Japan established an office in Tsukuba.
By 1995, the institute had transferred most of its facilities to this location. The Meguro campus continues to be used. It is the successor of the National Institute of Metal Research of Japan and part of the National Institute of Materials Science of Japan.

In 1966, the National Institute of Inorganic Materials of Japan was established in Toshima, Tokyo, Japan. It moved its headquarters to Tsukuba in 1972. This incident is considered to be the first relocation of a Japanese national research institution.

In 2001, the Japan National Institute of Materials Science, an independent administrative institution, was established in Tsukuba by merging Japan’s National Institute of Metal Research and Japan’s National Institute of Inorganic Materials.

Japan’s National Institute of Materials Science has developed into a vibrant organization and new initiatives are launched every month. More noteworthy among them are: the

establishment of the Biomaterials Center, the Superconducting Materials Center, the Computational Materials Science Center, and the Material Information Technology Station

in October 2001. The establishment of the Iron and Steel Research Center, the Eco-Environmental Materials Center, the Strong Magnetic Field Center, and Material Analysis in April 2002 The station

established the Japan Nanotechnology Research Network in June 2002. In

September 2003, the International Center for Young Scientists

was established. In April 2004, the Doctoral Program of Materials Science and the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of the University of Tsukuba were

established. The High Voltage Electron Microscope Station was established in May 2004.

2006 The second medium-term plan started in April.
This event coincided with the reorganization of the Japan National Institute of Materials Science and the

establishment of the International Materials Center in October 2007
