Hakodate City (Hakodate) is a port city located in the Toshima Comprehensive Promotion Bureau, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital of the Toshima Comprehensive Promotion Bureau. As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 and 143,221 households, with a population density of 412.83 people per square kilometer (1069.2 people per square mile), and a total area of 677.77 square kilometers (261.69 square miles). It is now the third largest city in Hokkaido, after Sapporo and Asahikawa.
