The history of the Steel Authority of India can be traced back to the Hindustan Steel Co., Ltd., which was established on January 19, 1954. The Steel Authority of India was established on January 24, 1973. With an annual output of 13.5 million metric tons of steel, it is the 24th largest steel producer in the world.
The Iron and Steel Authority of India operates and owns 5 integrated steel plants located in Lorkra, Bila, Durgapur, Pokaro and Burnpur. Salem, Durgapur and Bhadravathi are 3 special steel plants. It also owns a ferroalloy plant in Chandrapur. For the global expansion plan, the company is upgrading and establishing new facilities, especially the expansion and modernization plan of advanced green environmental technology.

In the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the company’s revenue was 5,186.6 billion rupees (approximately US$8.2 billion), net profit was 261.6 billion rupees (420 million US dollars), total assets were 919.61 billion rupees (15 billion US dollars), and total equity was 4,266.6 billion rupees (About US$6.8 billion). As of March 31, 2014, the company had 97,897 employees.
