Don Quijote Co., Ltd. (Don Quijote) is a discount chain store in Japan. It has more than 160 stores in Japan and 3 stores in Hawaii. It sells a wide range of products, covering groceries, electronics and clothing. It stays open late (3am or 5am, even 24 hours a day).
In September 1980, Don Quixote Co., Ltd. opened its first store in Suginami, Tokyo. At first, it was just a retail store, but the company started to develop wholesale market business in 1982. In March 1989, the company opened the first ‘Don Quixote’ store in Fuchu, Tokyo. With the change of company name, the store shifted its main business from wholesale to retail.
In June 1998, Don Quixote Corporation was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. As one of the few discount stores in Japan, the Japanese economic bubble did not have a catastrophic impact on the company. Due to the uncertainty of the Japanese economy, the Japanese people became more frugal, so the company began to promote store sales in the early 1990s. In 2013, the company acquired Marukai’s stores in Hawaii and California.
In February 2011, Don Quixote Co., Ltd. had a total of 163 stores. In fiscal year 2010, the company’s revenue was 487 billion yen/US$5.74 billion, operating income was 21.1 billion yen/US$251 million, net profit was 10.2 billion yen/US$122 million, and total assets were 302 billion yen/3.6 billion.
