The Roslin Institute is an animal science institute located in Easter Bush, Lothian, Scotland. It is part of the University of Edinburgh and is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The current director is Professor David Hume FRSE.
The Roslin Institute gained an international reputation in 1996 when Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell and colleagues cloned Dolly the Sheep. The Roslin Institute has contributed to many areas of animal science, especially in the fields of livestock improvement and quantitative genetics applications.
The Roslin Institute is responsible for scientific research on farm animals in the UK, developing new science, biotechnology, and breeding in molecular and cell biology.
