LiAZ is a bus manufacturing company located in Likino-Dulyovo, Russia. It is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of GAZ, which specializes in the design and manufacture of large and extra-large passenger cars.
LiAZ was founded in 1937 as a wood processing factory LOZOD (Likino Engineered Wood Testing Factory). It produces pressed wood products, as well as wood chipboard. In 1944, the factory was renamed LiMZ (Likino Machinery Factory) and began to produce small machines such as power saws and portable generators.
In 1959, the factory began to assemble ZIL-158 passenger cars, and in the same year it was renamed LiAZ. In 1967, the factory designed and started production of the first passenger car LiAZ-677. The factory will produce 194,183 passenger cars of this type in the next 29 years.
LiAZ began production of the new model LiAZ-5256 in 1986, which is today the most common large passenger car model in Russia (as of December 2013, more than 24,650 buses have been produced).
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, LiAZ began to encounter difficulties. In 1996, the bus production ceased and the factory declared bankruptcy in 1997. After that, the factory was reorganized and is now called Likinskij Avtobusnyj Zavod LLC. It was acquired by RusAvtoProm in 2000 and has been a subsidiary of GAZ Group since 2005.
