The Grand Hotel Wien opened in 1870 as the first luxury hotel in Vienna. At first, the hotel had more than 300 rooms, 200 bathrooms, a steam-powered elevator and a telegraph office.

The Vienna Hotel is located in the center of the Korso restaurant, making it a popular meeting place. In 1894, the waltz king Johann Strauß II celebrated its 50th anniversary at the hotel.
