Volotea is a Spanish low-cost airline with headquarters in Barcelona and bases in Spain, Italy and France.
Volotea was founded in Barcelona by former Vueling founders Carlos Muñoz and Lazarolos. The name ‘Volotea’ comes from the Spanish verb ‘revolotear’, which means ‘to fly out’. On April 5, 2012, the airline started operations using Venice Marco Polo Airport.
Volotea is supported by three private capital operating funds, two of which are from Europe (Axis Participaciones Empresariales and Corpfin Capital) and one from the United States (CCMP Capital).
Boeing announced on February 15, 2012 that it had signed an unknown number of long-term lease agreements for Boeing 717 aircraft with Volotea.
Volotea was established in 2011 and started operations in March 2012. The company has a total of 21 aircraft, 52 destinations, and the CEO is Carlos Muñoz.
