Bankinter, SA is a Spanish bank headquartered in Madrid. The company’s shares are listed and traded on the Madrid Stock Exchange and are Ibex35 index shares.
Bankinter was established in June 1965 as a joint venture ‘Industrial Bank of Spain’ between Santander and Bank of America. The Industrial Bank of Spain was listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange in 1972, when the bank became completely independent and transformed itself into a commercial bank.
In 1993, the Industrial Bank of Spain began to implement a growth strategy, including Banca Partnet and Red Agencial. In the same year, it became the first digital bank and successfully introduced electronic banking services. In 2006, the brand was transformed.
In 2009, Bankinter acquired 50% of Linea Directa from Royal Bank of Scotland. In September 2015, Bankinter announced the acquisition of Barclays’ retail business in Portugal, including 84 offices and Barclays Life Insurance Company.
As of December 31, 2015, Bankinter has 509 offices and 4405 employees (4,386 employees work in Spain and 19 employees work abroad).
