The Toronto-Dominion Bank originated from a group of businessmen involved in grain trading and marketing in Western Canada (the predecessor of Ontario). In order to meet their specific needs, such as commodity exchange, they are determined to establish a financial institution. On March 18, 1855, the Bank of Toronto was established with an authorized share capital of £500,000.
In July 1856, the Bank of Toronto opened its first office at 78 Chapel Street, Toronto, with three staff members. In 1860, the Bank of Toronto opened its first branch in Montreal outside of Ontario.
