Epic Games was founded by Tim Sweeney in 1991 as Potomac Computer Systems. After launching the first commercial video game ZZT in 1991, the company became Epic MegaGames in early 1992. The studio name was simplified to Epic Games in 1999.
Epic Games has developed a commercial game engine-Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine powers its internally developed video games, such as Fortnite and Unreal, Gears of War and Endless Sword series. In 2014, Unreal Engine was named ‘Most Successful Video Game Engine’ by Guinness World Records.
Epic Games owns video game developer Chair Entertainment and cloud-based software developer Cloudgine, and operates sub-studios of the same name in Seattle, England, Berlin, Yokohama and Seoul. The key personnel of Epic Games include CEO Tim Sweeney, chief programmer Steve Polge and art director Chris Perna. Tencent realized that the video game industry has a bright future and acquired 40% of Epic Games in 2012.
