Akamai Technologies is an Internet content distribution network company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its network is the world’s largest distributed computing platform, responsible for 15% to 20% of network traffic services. The company’s server network covers all parts of the world. Over the years, corporate clients have included Facebook, Bing, Twitter, and healthcare.gov.

When users navigate to the Akamai customer website, their browser will be redirected to a copy of the Akamai website, which is almost completely invisible to the vast majority of users. As of 2009, the intermediary secure connections raised a question that trying to connect to a popular website via HTTPS might show the Akamai backend.

Recently, Akamai Technologies’ enhanced security product Kona Website Defender has become a major selling point, and this product has become the company’s revenue growth point in 2013. The company was founded in 1998 by MIT graduate student Daniel M. Lewin, MIT professor of applied mathematics Tomton, Jonathan Seelig, Preetish Nijhawan and Randall Kaplan. Currently, Leighton serves as the company’s CEO. Akamai is a Hawaiian word that means’smart’ or’witty’.

Since its establishment in 1996, Leighton has been the head of the algorithm group of the MIT Computer Science Laboratory. He found that he could use applied mathematics and algorithms to solve the problem of network congestion. He asked for help from MIT graduate student Danny Lewin and others. Together, they develop mathematical algorithms that handle dynamic routing of content. In addition to Dr. Leighton and Mr. Levin, Jonathan Seelig and Randall Kaplan are also founders of Akamai Technologies.

At the end of 1998 and early 1999, a group of Internet business professionals joined the Akamai Technologies entrepreneurial team. Most notably, Paul Sagan, the former president of Time Inc., also joined the company. From 2003 to 2009, the company’s revenue increased by more than 32% year-on-year, and its operating margin in 2009 was 26%.

At the same time, Akamai Technologies expanded its global customers. In 2009, 28% of its revenue came from outside the United States, compared with 23% in the first two years. Part of this growth comes from Akamai’s core content delivery services. Beginning in December 2013, the company acquired network security provider Prolexic Technologies for approximately US$370 million. The transaction helps protect Akamai’s corporate customers from distributed denial of service attacks.

The chairman of Akamai Technologies is George H. Conrades, and the co-founder, chief scientist, and CEO is Tomton. In fiscal year 2011, its revenue was US$1.16 billion, operating income was US$290.65 million, net income was US$200.9 million, and it had a total of 3,000 employees.
