AbbVie is a research-based American biopharmaceutical company. On October 19, 2011, Abbott announced plans to split into two listed companies. The ‘new’ Abbott will focus on diversified products, including medical equipment, diagnostic equipment and nutritional products, while AbbVie will act as a research-based biopharmaceutical company.
The separation of the two companies took effect on January 1, 2013, and AbbVie was officially listed on the New York Stock Exchange on January 2, 2013. The company is led by Richard A. Gonzalez, who was formerly executive vice president of Abbott Pharmaceuticals.
AbbVie is headquartered in North Chicago, Illinois, and the chairman and chief executive officer is Richard A. Gonzalez. In the first quarter of 2015, the company had revenues of US$5.04 billion and a total of 26,000 employees.
