In 1980, founder Roger Runley moved from St. Louis to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he and his partners established Scottrade Securities. In 1981, Roger Runli returned to St. Louis and opened a second branch. In 1985, due to business model conflicts, he finally parted ways with his partners.
Roger Runli kept the company name Scottrade Securities and reduced the commission price to attract more customers. The approach was successful. By 1991, the company had 15 branches in the United States. Scottrade.com was launched in 1996 (Scottrader.com provides customers with streaming online quotes). Scottrade.com grew rapidly during the Internet bubble in the 1990s.
