Pacific Life was founded in 1868 by Leland Stanford, the former Governor of California. Stanford University is the company’s first policy holder. In 1906, Pacific Internet Life merged with Conservative Life, a life insurance company based in Los Angeles. After the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, the Pacific Life Board of Directors moved the company to Los Angeles.

In 2011, the Pacific Life Foundation donated US$5.5 million to more than 400 organizations in the fields of health and human services.
