Digg is a social news website. The website allows people to rank up or down in web content by voting.
In July 2008, Digg and Google entered into acquisition negotiations for a purchase price of US$200 million, but the deal eventually fell through. Four years later, on July 12, 2012, it was divided into three parts for sale: the Digg brand, website, and technology were sold to Betaworks for $500,000, and 15 staff members were transferred to the Washington Post for $120,000. SocialCode, a set of Digg patented products sold to LinkedIn for $4 million.
At first, Digg was just an experiment. It was created in November 2004 by Kevin Rose, Owen Byrne, Ron Gorodetzky, and Jay Adelson. At first, it was designed by Dan Reese as a free advertising system. The advertising system was used to fill the shortcomings of Google’s AdSense early project, but switched to MSN adCenter in 2007. The main function of the website is to allow users to discover, share and recommend web content.
Digg is headquartered in New York City, the CEO is Matt Williams, and the owner is Betaworks. In 2008, website revenue was 8.5 million US dollars. In 2012, it had 11 employees.
