Samsung Heavy Industries is the world’s largest shipbuilding company and one of the’Big Three’ shipbuilding companies in South Korea. It is the core subsidiary of the Samsung Group. The company’s main business involves ships, floating objects, gantry cranes, ship digital equipment, and other construction and engineering.
Samsung Heavy Industries owns ship block manufacturing plants in Ningbo and Rongcheng, China. The company specializes in the manufacture of high value-added and special purpose ships, including LNG carriers, oil rigs, FPSO/FSO, ultra-large container ships and Arctic shuttle tankers. In recent years, it has also manufactured LNG ships and drilling ships.
Samsung Heavy Industries was established on August 5, 1974 and is headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. The vice chairman and chief executive officer is Dae-young Park. As of March 2009, it had 12,481 employees.
In 2012, Samsung Heavy Industries had revenues of US$12.7 billion, net income of US$700 million, total assets of US$14.6 billion, and total equity of US$4.6 billion.
